Before you begin to choose or design your engagement ring it's important that you understand some fundamental aspects about diamonds...
It's quite common to confuse a diamond's cut with its shape. The cut describes a diamonds light performance, dimensions and finish. Shape refers to the outline of the diamond when viewed from above. Round is by far the most popular diamond shape, followed by squared shapes such as princess, Asscher and emerald.
Most gemologists consider cut to be the most important diamond characteristic because even if a diamond has perfect colour and clarity, a diamond with a poor cut will have dulled brilliance.
The width and depth of a diamond can have an effect on how light travels through the diamond, and how it exits in the form of brilliance.
Too shallow - and light is lost out of the bottom causing the diamond to lose brilliance. Too deep - and light escapes out of the sides causing the diamond to appear dark and dull.
If the cut is good to ideal - then light travels in through the top, bounces within and comes back up and out of the top - giving a brilliance and fire to the diamond.
Most jewellers will not provide any detail of cut, colour or clarity - this is because most jewellers stock diamonds that fall below a 'certifiable' quality range. Typically, a low to mid-range retailer will stock diamonds that fall below the nirvana quality threshhold - cut will be fair to poor, colour - the best being 'K' and going way beyond 'M' - these diamonds will have a yellow tinge to them when compared directly with a colourless diamond within the range of 'I to D'. Clarity will be I1, I2 or I3 (inclusions visible to the eye) and many jewellers will have diamonds classed as Pq1 - this is the lowest possible clarity and these diamonds are very cheap to purchase.
Some better quality jewellers will provide detail of colour and clarity - and they may stock diamonds with a good colour and clarity, however, if the cut is not ideal, very good or good... the price the jeweller paid for the diamond will be very much lower, the appearance of that diamond will be compromised, however the retail value will still be very high...
Diamonds are complex characters - it's easy to pay to too much...
So when shopping for diamonds and comparing prices - you must make sure you are comparing 'apples with apples'... Don't be confused... or even mis-led...
If a diamond has a good or better cut - and nirvana diamonds are mostly either very good or ideal - the colour and clarity is less important - you can purchase a diamond that will have fantastic brilliance and fire with a mid range colour such as 'H' and a clarity such as SI1 - which contains slight inclusions not visible to the human eye.
What you can be sure of with Nirvana Diamonds is that we will provide you with exactly what you require - at a fair and highly competitive price compared to high street jewellers.
Nirvana Diamonds standard diamond quality for engagement rings is 'G' colour, VS1/2 clarity - this is hugely different in quality and appearance to that of a standard diamond in a high street jeweller.
